Dante  |  DANTE June-July 2017
DANTE goes to press as the sun shines on the Venice Biennale.
Damien Hirst is also showing works in the Palazzo Grassi, along the Grand Canal, and the city’s old customs house, Punta della Dogana. Meanwhile, the film world gathers at Cannes and there are blockbuster shows across Europe. Some of them are hot, some not, but all provide food for thought. We thought it was time for a summer Art Issue, which you are now holding, whether in print or phone app form.
The Biennale is a good place to start and inspire. We guide you to some of the most spectacular Biennale exhibits. DANTE is the only International magazine with an Italian soul. Venice is very close to our hearts, even as we have grown.
Elsewhere, we cover both young artists and some who have been around a while. We return to Nicola Roos, our cover star of a year ago when she won international recognition even as a student. She has now graduated – and moved on from sculpting an African Samurai to portraying a Mexican enigma.
By contrast we feature FX Moya, who has spent decades as a leading architect and is now winning acclaim as a painter. His story has parallels to another New York professional-turned-painter, Marilyn Perry, whose works featured in the last print DANTE. We take pride in reporting names that others have not covered so extensively. Also exhibitions outside the ordinary, such one on women cartoonists which inspired a learned and amusing piece by Mark Bryant, along with some drawings not seen in decades.
