The joy of cooking with others
Far from being a place for solitary toil and cloistered creativity, the kitchen ought to be a room where friendships are nurtured, shoulder to shoulder, over simmering stews and steaming pots, says Debora Robertson. Added bonus: you get dinner at the end

I was always picked last for games at school, and it took me until later in life to discover my perfect team sport: cooking with friends. You chat, laugh, sing along terribly to country music, segue smoothly from coffee to wine and then, suddenly – bonus! – dinner’s ready and you all get to have a lovely sit-down.
I have friends who always make the pudding, others who are brilliant at grilling, composing salads or making sauces – much in the same way sporty types know who’s the best striker, defender or midfielder. Back-of-the-net dinner perfection guaranteed (here endeth my sporting analogies).
