Are competitive people more at risk of eating disorders? It could be time to take a deep breath…
Good food is important because it provides the body with the energy required to function well. But food is more than just fuel for the body – it’s about nurturing the mind too, and proper nutrition plays a huge part in our performance as human beings, whether that’s in sport, academe or the workplace. What we eat has an integral role in regulating immune, bone, hormonal, physical and mental health. At times, though, the way we relate to food can become fraught with anxiety.
Likewise, healthy competition is an essential component of human nature, driving productivity – but when the balance tips too far in the direction of merely chasing success, the consequences for health and for performance can be negative. The result can be a depressed immune system, poor sleep or a dysfunctional relationship with food.
