…with a frosty walk at Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens in Northumberland – a 19th-century Greek Revival mansion and neighbouring medieval castle. In the early 18th century it became a tradition for the ladies of the house to plant snowdrops, and this month you can see the fruits of their labours in the surrounding 30 acres of gardens. Do you know a young person yearning to be the next Nigel or Nigella? If so, let them know about the Young Food Writer of the Year Competition. Established in 2008, it’s the only national food writing competition for young people, with three age groups: 10 and under, 11-14 years and 15-18 years (and one winner per group). The theme for this year’s competition is ‘food and heroes’, and delicious. editor Karen Barnes will be among the judges. The competition opens 8 February and closes 30 April.
