“I’ve always loved dumplings, especially the Italian potato dumplings known as gnocchi. When I lost my front teeth at the age of five, the only consolation was that, until they grew back, I could ask Mum for gnocchi every day.
I was brought up in Italy where it’s traditional to make gnocchi at celebratory feasts. My grandma’s kitchen would become a production line for all the gnocchi our many relatives would eat during a single lengthy meal. All the women and girls would don their aprons, roll up their sleeves and get peeling, boiling, kneading, cutting and shaping. The result: hundreds of gnocchi ready for the next day.
