New
guidelines
on
artificial
sweeteners
are
expected
soon
from
the
World
Health
Organisation
(WHO)
after
a
safety
review.
Last
year
WHO
found
artificial
sweeteners
such
as
acesulfame
K,
aspar tame,
saccharine
and
sucralose
may
aid
weight
loss
in
the
short
term
–
but
also
linked
long-term
use
to
the
possible
increased
risk
of
obesity,
type
2
diabetes
and
cardiovascular
disease.
The
guidelines
will
be
the
first
ever
issued
by
WHO
to
cover
artificial
sweeteners
and
follows
research
raising
questions
about
their
impact
on
health.
