TASTES LIKE HOME
My gran, Joan, was a terriic cook, not least for her excellent pastry skills and her knack of turning everyday ingredients into something quite magical.
She was a huge inspiration when I was a boy and I liked nothing more than to spend afternoons watching her cook. Her skills were passed on to my mum, Rose, who indulged my love of baking when I was a boy and let me loose in her kitchen. Had I not become a maths teacher, I’d almost certainly have been a baker.
This decades-old recipe, handed down from my gran, is a twist on the sausage roll and it remains one of my favourite bakes. There’s barely a family gathering when I won’t make up a large batch. It was my gran’s original recipe but it was Mum’s idea to make them with croissant dough.
I recall Gran telling me that, in her day, even adding onion and herbs to the sausagemeat was deemed adventurous, but her sausage rolls were always polished of quickly. Making these evokes wonderful memories of time spent in the kitchen with my gran and my mum.
