Cheese behind the scenes
See how food awards are really judged. Launched last year to promote the best in British and Irish cheesemaking – an industry heavily challenged by the pandemic – the second annual Virtual Cheese Awards recognises the best across eight categories, including blue, cheddar and artisan cheeses. Featuring live judging and talks with cheese experts, the event on 7 May will be hosted by food broadcaster Nigel Barden and streamed via the Awards’ Facebook page and YouTube channel. Donate to view extra content and support cheesemakers through the Specialist Cheesemakers Association. virtualcheeseawards.com
Wanted: aspiring cake artists
Sugarcraft show Cake International has launched an online junior baking and decorating competition with Kenwood Kids Club. There are 11 categories across five age groups (up to the age of 18) including cupcakes, cookies, and cakes – with decorating themes such as ‘dreams’ and ‘my favourite animal’.
Entrants submit photos of their creations to be assessed by professional judges. Entry costs £5 and all competitors receive a certificate, personalised feedback and access to online decorating demos.
First place in each category will win a Kenwood Chefette (a mini stand mixer) and the Best in Show wins a Kenwood kMix stand mixer worth £400.
Closing date 4pm 14 May, winners announced 30 May.
