The Hive Mind team aren’t ashamed to admit that no market research or margin calculations were carried out before developing their Traditional Mead.
“Budget always seems to be a limiting factor with meads, so we decided to take a no-holdsbarred approach,” says Kit Newell who, with his brother, Matt, runs Hive Mind Mead & Brew Co on the Welsh side of the Wye Valley. “We’d make the best product we possibly could, then worry about the target market and price afterwards.”
While that might not always be the safest product development strategy, in this case it worked. Despite the hefty price tag of £30 for 70cl, the 14.5% Traditional Mead is the micromeadery ’s star performer – and the winner of the coveted Great Taste Golden Fork Award for Wales.
