SMALL CHANGE, BIG RESULTS
That’s the principle behind charity Action Against Hunger’s Love Food Give Food campaign, which runs throughout September and October.
Restaurants across the UK, including Sabor, Hawskmoor, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal and The River Cafe, will be adding an optional £1 to the bill or donating a percentage of the proceeds from a specific dish towards the charity’s work. More than a quarter of the world’s population don’t have enough to eat, but just £1 can provide a day’s sustenance – and any more helps families grow their own food and access clean water and healthcare. Over £3 million has been donated during the 10 years of the campaign, which in 2019 aims to raise £550,000 and reach more than 13,000 children worldwide.

More than 3,000 traders entered the 2019 British Street Food Awards (britishstreetfood.co.uk), and the top 90 have been competing in five qualifying heats across the country this summer. The best will go head-to-head at a cook-off in London on 13-14 September, when judges Matt Tebbutt (below) and actor Fay Ripley will choose the champions with help from the public. The winners will take on 16 other national champions at the European Street Food Awards in Sweden on 28-29 September.

IN THIS MONTH…
1519 Magellan set sail from Spain on 20 September in search of a western route to the Spice Islands. He was killed on an island in the Philippines, but one of his ships made it and returned almost three years later, loaded with spices whose value was greater than the cost of the entire original fleet.
