DIVA MEETS ARTIST AND SELFPROCLAIMED SHIT-STIRRER, MARCIA X
PHOTO SOPHIE ELLIOTT

Marcia X describes herself as an unapologetic brown woman and that identity is central to her work. We caught up with her to find out more.

DIVA: Hi Marcia, can you tell us a bit about you, your background and what you do?

MARCIA X: I was born in Chicago to Latin American parents, but I primarily identify with my Puerto Rican heritage since I was raised in that environment. I’m also a product of a strict, rigid Catholic upbringing, but flipped the bird to the Church a while ago, for reasons I don’t need to explain. I’d say my experience as the child of immigrants is probably typical, and I was impressed early on with the need for getting an education, achieving, sacrifice and moving forward through struggle. It has stuck with me, and I try to keep those things in perspective as much as I can. As for what I do? I’m an artist. A shitstirrer, a person who enjoys seeing (usually) men in authoritative academic positions get a little uncomfortable when I say something they just weren’t ready for. I create, curate and write, in order to not just better myself but so that I can give my people something we lack in this society and all facets within it; respect and representation.
