Trends. Even the last four letters suggest that none of them ever last. But some things become popular for good reason, whilst others are just fluff. So which of 2017’s health and fitness fads should you really follow?

2017 looks remarkably like science fiction. Never mind that for the second year running the much-respected American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) named wearables (that’s the likes of activity trackers, smart watches, heart-rate monitors and GPS tracking devices) as a top trend in their annual worldwide survey. We’re on the cusp of entering a brave new world, says Steve Ward, executive director of the not-for-profit body UK Active (ukactive.com): “Soon, virtual reality will enable you to do your 1,500-metre warm-up run alongside Mo Farah, before cycling through the craters on the moon and rounding off your workout with some soothing stretches on the shores of Lake Como.”
