TRANS PERFORMER AND ELLE COLUMNIST RHYANNON STYLES TALKS TO JANE CZYZSELSKA ABOUT HER NEW AUTOBIOGRAPHY
PHOTO REBECCA ESKILSSON

In the 30-something years since doctors incorrectly assigned her sex, Rhyannon Styles has journeyed to the edge of sanity and back. Her autobiographical debut invites us along for a ride that takes us from her childhood in England’s rural Staffordshire, through art school, to performing with Kylie Minogue and partying with Courtney Love and New York’s infamous club kids, of which more later.

Styles’ autobiography is unique. Of course it is: it’s written by her but not in the glossy tones required by her fashion magazine column, rather she spikes fabulous celebrity stories with darker moments – the drink and drugfuelled hot messes – and emerges zenlike, a young sage dressed in vintage lime velvet and hot pink lips.
