MARNINE SIMPSON

When the news broke recently that Geordie Shore star Marnie Simpson had come out as bisexual, I’ll admit to a little bit of an eyeroll. Simpson’s interview with Heat magazine had come shortly after co-stars Charlotte Crosby and Chloe Etherington’s dalliance under a duvet, which I read as another attempt to trivialise bi identities for ratings and publicity. Marnie’s revelation felt like more of the same.

I wasn’t alone. When we posted a story about Marnie’s coming out on our Facebook page, many of the comments laid bare an underlying and insidious biphobia in our community. Some also expressed a somewhat understandable mistrust of female celebrities who come out as bisexual only to backtrack later – “doing a Jessie J” was the phrase used by some. And then there were bi readers who fumed about what they saw as having their identities co-opted for a quick buck, and others who simply refused to believe Marnie’s admission might be genuine. “Don’t believe a word,” said one. “Sorry but bullshit,” said another.
