THE BRICKS THAT BUILT THE HOUSES

Kate Tempest

Kate Tempest is a young woman of many talents. A regular in London’s poetry and theatre scenes, Tempest became a household name when her album Everybody Down was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2014. Now her long-awaited debut novel, The Bricks That Built The Houses, adds another string to her bow. The novel tells the story of the intertwined lives of young Londoners, trying to survive in a city transformed by austerity and gentrification. Tempest faces some teething problems in the shift from poetry to prose, with a far-fetched plot disrupting the book’s more intimate pleasures. The novel is best when she simply lets her voice and observations ring out, especially on matters of love and lust.
