“Bring On The Challenge!”

Representing Hong Kong at last year’s Mr Gay World finals, Mass Luciano was pipped for top spot by Klaus Burkart from Germany. But, six months later, Klaus has resigned and the title has passed to Mass. A fashion designer, blogger, romantic and passionate advocate for the LGBT world, he spoke to DNA about what he hopes to achieve during his brief reign.

DNA: How do you feel about stepping into the Mr Gay World role?

Mass Luciano: It feels great! Totally unexpected, but I welcome the challenge and hope to make the best of the next few months.

Why did Klaus step down? Have you been in touch with him? Klaus and I stayed in touch after the competition in South Africa. There’s nothing scandalous about him stepping down. He accepted a new job and unfortunately didn’t have enough time off to fulfill the duties of Mr Gay World.

The next international Mr Gay World finals are in Malta in April – does that give you enough time to leave your mark on the title?

Absolutely! But I will need to be more aggressive since I only have a few months left to get my global initiative off the ground.

What would you like to achieve as MrGay World? I want to raise awareness about HIV testing around the world. With all the advancement in medical treatments for HIV, there isn’t enough dialogue about the importance of knowing one’s HIV status. Guys are transmitting the virus unknowingly and there has been an increase of new HIV infections among young gay men, especially in Asia. Getting tested for HIV reduces the risk of new infections by 95 percent, which is huge. I hope to get more people talking about this issue and encourage everyone to include HIV testing into their routines.
