20 REASONS TO LOVE CANADA

CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES MAY BE NEIGHBOURS BUT THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN FURTHER APART. WITH INTERNATIONAL TRAVELLERS INCREASINGLY CHOOSING CANADA OVER THE USA, XAV JUDD CELEBRATES A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITE CANADIAN THINGS.

QUEBEC CITY

Alluring redbrick and ochre buildings with slate-green turrets that jut into a skyline bursting with clouds; that’s the enchanting vista you can expect to see in spring or summer in what is one of North America’s earliest settlements. On the north bank of the Saint Lawrence River and the capital of Quebec province, this city was established as a French colony by Gallic explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1608. The Unesco World Heritage-listed neighbourhood of Old Quebec pleasingly still has a plethora of original fortifications – bast ions, ramparts, gates. Also, to be found in this milieu, are architectural marvels like the grand hotel Château Frontenac and Place Royale, and the urban park, The Plains Of Abraham.

PEOPLE AND SOCIETY

In 1971, Canada became the first country to adopt multiculturalism as official policy. In respect to LGBT rights, there are various anti-discrimination statutes, the gay community has been able to serve in the military for over a quarter of a century, and same-sex marriage was legalised in 2005. Their current PM, Justin Trudeau marches in Gay Pride parades with his wife and kids. Worldly travellers will say that Canadians are among t he friendliest. Lost on the Metro? They’re happy to help. Struggling with French? No problem. Americans often ridicule t hem for their kindness and generosity, which tells us more about Americans than reflecting badly on Canadians.

About DNA Magazine

Pack your sexiest swimwear and your sunnies, this issue we're off to the magical Maldives. In DNA #210, a special travel issue, we serve up some serious beachside babeness as cover model Alexander Dorokhov shows off the latest in resort fashion while recharging his (already beautiful) body in the wellness and relaxation bliss of The Maldives' amazing spas. We get to know the charming Ibrahim in Egypt's old city of Alexandria, discover regional Australia’s hidden gay gems, head to the snow in New Zealand for gay ski week, and visit a “straight friendly” boutique hotel chain. There's also 20 Things We Love About Canada, which may make you want to visit to the land of Justins and Ryans! Your heartstrings will be strummed by 21-year-old musician Jaimie Wilson, your hips will be moved by Aussie hunk Sam Sparro and his tribute to George Michael, and you'll go weak at the knees for twinkalicious boyband GNTLMN when you heard their version of a famous Carpenters' song. Dear Diva lays down some relationship rules, and Dr Zac helps check your prostate health. For global Pride month, we wave a few of the LGBTI+ flags that celebrate the great biodiversity of our community. All that and more, this month in DNA.
