The Diary of River Song

RRP £20 (CD/download)

For all her swooning devotion to the Doctor, River Song has always been the headline act in her own drama. Usually one step ahead of everyone else – including her know-it-all husband – and forever alluding to an off-stage life of thrilling adventure, she’s basically the Doctor with added sass and space hair. Factor in Alex Kingston’s genuine star quality and, if anyone was a shoo-in for an afterlife in the Big Finish data core, it’s River.

What’s sometimes less obvious is that she’s also a qualified archaeologist – a fact Jenny T Colgan puts to good use in the first of these four extracts from the professor’s famous TARDIS-blue diary. At the start of The Boundless Sea, River has retreated into self-imposed exile as a bluestocking university academic (in her tangled cable wire of a timeline, this is some time between her pyramid-top wedding to the Doctor and The Angels Take Manhattan). But it’s not long before she’s tempted back into the field by the excavation of a 3,000-year-old Mesopotamian tomb whose inhabitant’s eternal sleep appears to have been exaggerated.
