Dress for the occasion

All schoolchildren look forward to dressing-up days, especially when it means dressing up as their favourite Doctors...

Doctor Who is now being enjoyed by a whole new generation. But it feels different this time...

One of the many, many, many things they don’t tell you about becoming a parent is that the moment you hear the patter of tiny feet, you are expected to suddenly transform into a cross between Raymond Cusick, June Hudson and Neill Gorton.

It started slowly. There was the odd pirate party here, the occasional ‘wear red, white and blue’ picnic there. There was World Book Day at nursery, but we cheated with the off-the-peg Toy Story costumes they’d had for Christmas, although I did send them in with a Toy Story book to ‘prove’ that they were sort-of book characters too, actually. It was amazing how many themes we could twist to feature Woody and Buzz Lightyear, right from the time the costumes swamped them and had to be held up with several belts, up to the time the trousers were ending somewhere around the mid-calf area.
