Although Doctor Who had been off-air for more than three years by the start of 1993, DWM was in good health in the run-up to its 200th issue. There was a celebratory mood in the air, as the show itself was marking its 30th anniversary, and every issue during the year featured a 30th anniversary insignia.

The 200th issue was commemorated by a special gatefold cover featuring all seven Doctors, painted by Alister Pearson.

“Artwork covers were a concept I inherited from John Freeman’s run,” says Gary Russell, who by this point had stepped up from the role of feature writer to being DWM’s editor. “I’m not sure when I phased them out – I have at the back of my mind that the Invasion of the Dinosaurs cover on Issue 203 might have been the last one. Certainly I was more interested in having art covers on Doctor Who Classic Comics [a short-lived sister title launched in 1992] rather than on DWM. That said, I asked Alister to do Issue 200 because no photo could really do us justice – how do you sum up 200 issues of DWM in a single photo? Remember, we had no Photoshop in those days. Plus I enjoyed working with Ali. He delivered the purple one for 200 and I immediately said, ‘Ooh we should do a seven villains version,’ and that sort of fell into place then for the 30th anniversary in November [Issue 207]. My original plan for the 30th anniversary issue then transmuted over to the Special we did, which involved recreating the 10th Anniversary Radio Times Special cover but with Sylvester McCoy and his monsters on Telos!”
