A History of Doctor Who in 100 Objects...

Just for a change, this month we’re not going to mention Black Orchid once. Instead, let us begin by pondering another story from the same year. The TARDIS has touched down in the forests of Castrovalva, and Nyssa has sensibly decided to swap her wispy chiffon skirt for a practical pair of trousers. “There’s a whole room full of clothes if you want to change,” she suggests to Tegan, who bewilderingly declines the offer and decides to battle on through the undergrowth in her twin-set and heels.

It’s a delicate matter, but not to beat about the Castrovalvan bush, one can’t help wondering how smelly it must get aboard the TARDIS at around this time. Tegan remains stuck in her air hostess uniform for the whole season. Nyssa doesn’t change again until Snakedance. Apart from brief spells in his vampire get-up and an Urbankan spacesuit, Adric never changes at all. The one exception to all this is the fancy dress ball in Black Orchid (I promised we wouldn’t mention it once, and I was right – we’ve mentioned it twice now), during which it would be nice to think that Lady Cranleigh’s long-suffering domestic staff take it upon themselves to give Adric’s pyjamas a jolly good boil-wash. Tegan’s delight at being allowed to keep her fancy dress costume at the end of the story raises the enticing possibility that she might decide to wear it again some time (it’d be ideal for running around those Earthshock caves), but no, it’s straight back to the Air Australia uniform. Boring.
