It’s the new frontier of fandom – let’s meet the giants of Doctor Who podcasting.

Paul Cornell, who’s written for Doctor Who in pretty much every medium, is a massive podcast fan. “It’s kind of amateur radio that at its best is akin to ‘real’ radio,” he says. “it’s like having a mate in the room with you.”

For someone who’s been active in fandom since the 1980s, Paul says he finds the form exciting because “It’s where a new living, breathing criticism of Doctor Who is happening, and it’s a much more liberal one than you find on the internet.”

Right now, the most lauded and listened-to Doctor Who podcasts are coming out of North America and Canada. It begs the question, is there something about the format that’s inimical to British fan culture? “Well, there is a cynicism – or at least an irony – at the heart of Britishness, which would play ill to a podcast audience,” reasons Paul. “You wouldn’t really get people listening to a negative rant, so there has to be an element of open-minded positivity about this stuff.”

Enthused by the movement, Paul launched his own podcast in 2015. It eats into his time and makes him no money, but “I just wanted to join that community.” The Cornell Collective comes out monthly (details at www.paulcornell.com) and features the man himself, in discussion with friends from the worlds of science-fiction, comics and Doctor Who.
