The Sirens call

On board the Fancy, a seventeenth-century pirate ship, the Doctor, Amy and Rory find that Captain Avery and his crew are being attacked by a Siren…

The Time Team

The continuing mission to watch all 839 episodes of Doctor Who, in order from the start…

I am NOT wearing that,” says Will, as Emma pulls a fancy pirate hat out of the dressing-up box.

“Oh go on, you scurvy dog” she pleads. “Everyone else is getting into the theme!” Chris is sporting a splendid eyepatch, and Michael has a hook for a hand, which is proving awkward when it comes to getting the Blu-ray disc out of its case and into the player.

“Ooh,” he fusses, “we’ve not had a Curse in a while. I like a good Curse.”

And it’s not just any old Curse – this is The Curse of the Black Spot. “Very Treasure Island,” says Will.

“Spooky pirates, and a boat wreathed in fog,” marvels Emma. “This is a lovely start – and a nice contrast from the slick, 60s space-race look of the previous story.”

All is not well aboard the pirates’ ship, the Fancy – the rigging is adorned with charms and talismans, positioned as if to ward off something ‘orrible.

“Ooh, it’s Hugh Bonneville from Downton Abbey!” exclaims Michael, as we catch our first sight of the ship’s captain. “I hate Downton Abbey,” he seethes. “And there’s Lee Ross, from Steven Moffat’s Press Gang, as the boatswain,” spots Will.

The boatswain reports that one of the crew is injured – and it could be fatal.
