We talk to the creative talents behind the upcoming Doctor Who releases…

The Ninth Doctor Chronicles

In 2013, Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary was marked with the Destiny of the Doctor audio series: a talking book for each Doctor, narrated in the third person by a cast member from the era, with one additional guest actor per release. The Ninth Doctor’s instalment, Night of the Whisper, was read by Nicholas Briggs, who had voiced various monsters opposite Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor on screen.

“My vocal indication of Christopher Eccleston seemed to go down pretty well,” Nick recalls. “Christopher is currently passing on the opportunity of playing the Ninth Doctor on audio, but he wishes us well. So we looked at other options, and we thought, ‘Why not try something a bit like Night of the Whisper and the other Destiny of the Doctor stories – more like audiobooks, but with two voices – and tell Ninth Doctor stories that way?’”

The result is The Ninth Doctor Chronicles, which Nick narrates. “The format is quite different to usual audio dramas from Big Finish, because much of it is descriptive, and the narrator becomes all the different characters,” observes director Helen Goldwyn. “When we record it, Nick conjures up these characters with such skill – particularly the Ninth Doctor – and it’s brilliant. Once you’ve got the special effects and the music, it feels just as expansive as a full-cast drama.”
