BOOK CASE

Younger Doctor Who fans – and those who are young at heart – have wealth of new books to choose from…

BBC BOOKS

Ican’t ever remember being unable to read. I can’t actually remember learning to read, either. I studied English Language and Linguistics at university and child language acquisition was something which fascinated me. Learning a language is an extremely complex process. Yet, you learnt to read, write and speak your native language when you were very young. Well done you! The likelihood is you started off with an alphabet book as a young pre-schooler just beginning to recognise letters. If you’re reading this text now, that’s a pretty sure sign that you’re way beyond the alphabet book stage of reading – unless you have kids, alphabet books are probably off your radar. But even so, let me draw your attention to T Is for TARDIS

Average alphabet books can be dry and predictable: A is for apple, B is for ball, C is for cat, D is for dog, and so on. But T Is for TARDIS is different. It takes you on an alphabetical tour of the Doctor Who universe. ‘A is for angel’ – and the page is colourfully illustrated with a Weeping Angel creeping up behind Amy Pond as she eats an apple. ‘B is for bow tie’, ‘C is for Cyberman’, and of course, ‘D is for Doctor’. The book is simple but quite charming. You might even call it retro – a novelty item for grown-ups (who could read it cover to cover in 30 seconds, no doubt).

However, it stands up as a children’s alphabet book in its own right. We all know that Doctor Who has a magical ability to inspire and engage its fans from a very young age and I’m sure there are plenty of adult Doctor Who fans out there who are parents and want to indoctrinate (pun intended) their little ones. T Is for TARDIS is a bright and colourful introduction to the world of Doctor Who for those just learning to read – fans in training.
