Lucky Number 13

Jodie Whittaker hasn’t started recording her first series of Doctor Who, but she’s well aware of the historic opportunity it represents.
Jodie Whittaker as Cath Hardacre in Trust Me.

It’s Thursday 10 August and Jodie Whittaker is making time for Doctor Who Magazine. We find her in reflective mood, wondering how her predecessors felt as they waited in the wings. “I don’t know if you interviewed Peter, Matt or David,” she says, “but I’m sure they were just as excited, nervous and liberated.”

Jodie’s casting as the Thirteenth Doctor has been subjected to levels of debate and scrutiny that are unprecedented in Doctor Who’s long history. She hasn’t even seen any full scripts yet, but she’s already firmly associated with a role that’s threatening to eclipse the publicity for her latest series – BBC One’s medical drama Trust Me. Jodie plays Cath Hardacre, a principled and resourceful nurse who is suspended from her NHS job after witnessing a case of medical malpractice. In order to keep working Cathy assumes the identity of a soon-to-emigrate friend, lifting her qualifications and credentials from discarded papers she finds in a dustbin.
