Gary Pollard looks back on 2017’s monsters with great satisfaction. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the results throughout this whole series,” he says. “It just looks great, and I’m very proud of it.” Having already given us his takes on the Zygons, the Ice Warriors and the original Cybermen, Gary nominates a few more of his favourite Doctor Who monsters.

“It would be interesting to revisit the Wirrn from The Ark in Space [1975]. The story’s very dark, but the prolific use of bubble-wrap is distracting. The Wirrn would be best as a suit, but the challenge would be to create a convincing movement. Colour schemes and translucent materials would hugely enhance the metamorphosis from larvae to giant mantis!
