THE DOCTOR’S PUFFERFISH

Pressed to nominate something that symbolises Doctor Who, a pufferfish might not spring immediately to mind – but bear with me. At the opening of Listen, the Doctor delivers a soliloquy in which he ponders “perfect hunters”, and watches a lioness bringing down a wildebeest. Next he considers “perfect defence”, and we see a pufferfish inflating like a balloon and extruding its spines. Interestingly, this is not the first time that the humble Tetraodon cutcutia has appeared in Doctor Who. Not by a long chalk – but first things first. In order to unpack the hitherto unexplored topic of the emblematic significance of pufferfish in Doctor Who, we must temporarily allow the little fellow to swim away; we’ll catch up with him again in a few paragraphs’ time.
