We talk to the talents behind the upcoming Doctor Who releases…

Static

AUDIO DRAMA BIG FINISH RRP £14.99 (CD), £12.99 (DOWNLOAD)

Earlier this year, when Static was first announced, writer Jonathan Morris said he hoped it would be “the scariest, most unsettling Doctor Who story since The Chimes of Midnight” – the 2002 audio frequently cited as one of the creepiest ever.

“I think that was part of the brief, actually”, he tells us now. “With anything, you need to have some sort of challenge to yourself, and to try and write the spookiest Big Finish story there’s ever been… well, you’re not going to succeed, probably! But by trying and falling short, you’ll probably do better than you otherwise would.”

The mystery begins when the TARDIS brings the Sixth Doctor, Constance and Flip to a static caravan park, cut off from the outside world by impenetrable mist.

“I was trying to think of spooky Doctor Who locations”, explains Jonny, “and a caravan site, particularly in bad weather, becomes like a seaside town during winter – there’s that empty quality of being abandoned, unwanted.

“One of the spooky ideas I had is that if you’re walking past a phone box and the phone starts ringing for you, would you go and pick up the phone? It’s even spookier if it’s an old, 1970s-style phone box with that very harsh, jangly ring. The other idea was that if you’re listening to a radio which is out of tune, you get the sound of static radio interference, and you occasionally get wisps of voices coming through, sometimes in foreign languages – it was the idea that someone would start screaming for help in the middle of that. So it’s trying to create those ‘hairs on the back of the neck’ moments, and build a story out of them.”
