The Man Who Trevor Was

In 1974, a newly regenerated Doctor battled Daleks, Clawrantulars and giant land crabs in theatre production Seven Keys to Doomsday. We pay tribute to Trevor Martin, the first man to portray the Doctor on stage.

Early in June 1974, television viewers saw Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor regenerate into Tom Baker’s Fourth in the closing moments of Planet of the Spiders Part Six.

But in December, audiences at the Adelphi Theatre in London witnessed a completely different regeneration – one in which Pertwee’s Doctor became an avuncular, white-haired figure wearing a dark frock coat, loud checked trousers and an elaborate Victorian cravat.

For four weeks only, this new Doctor appeared live on stage in Doctor Who and the Daleks in Seven Keys to Doomsday, thwarting the Daleks’ evil Doomsday Plan to conquer the galaxy with the Ultimate Weapon of the Masters of Karn. In each of the play’s 44 performances between 16 December 1974 and 11 January 1975, the Doctor was portrayed by Trevor Martin, a 45-year-old Shakespearean actor who already had one Doctor Who credit to his name, having previously appeared as the Second Time Lord at the Doctor’s trial in the final episode of The War Games (1969). He was later heard in the BBC Radio 5 serial The Paradise of Death (1993) and the Big Finish audio drama Flip-Flop (2003), making him one of only a handful of actors to have appeared in Doctor Who on television, stage, radio and audio.

Born in Enfield, North London, on Sunday 17 November 1929, Trevor Gordon Martin was the son of a General Post Office clerk who had been wounded at Gallipoli during the First World War.
