Torchwood: Aliens Among Us 3

RRP £28 (CD), £25 (DOWNLOAD)

Made with the input of Torchwood creator Russell T Davies, Aliens Among Us launched last year as the Doctor Who spin-off’s official fifth season. Jack Harkness, Gwen Cooper and Rhys Williams returned to the remains of their underground Cardiff base, joined by three new operatives: Mr Colchester, Tyler Steele and Orr.

But Cardiff, now under complete alien control, was a city divided; the eight episodes released so far have seen Torchwood routinely encounter xenophobia, terrorism and religious fanaticism. Gwen was divided, too; now played by two actors, the character’s real self was suppressed within an impostor prepared to murder to keep her identity secret. In the final moments of The Empty Hand, the last episode of 2017, the team itself seemed about to fracture, as Gwen and Colchester confronted Jack over some questionable leadership decisions. And then Yvonne Hartman turned up.

“Yvonne is ‘fabulous with fangs’ – Servalan for the workplace!” says Tim Foley, who wrote the cliffhanger comeback of the former Torchwood London boss, last seen as a Cyberman in the 2006 Doctor Who episode Doomsday. “I really enjoy her approach and her dogmatic way of getting things done. I was just really intrigued to see what was going to happen next, because when I wrote The Empty Hand, I didn’t know I was writing the next one!”

Tim’s Poker Face opens Aliens Among Us 3, the series’ final volume, and picks up where he left off. “We’ve had the rise of Jack as a master manipulator”, he says, “so Yvonne in this story is very much the counterpoint to that, and we see just how different and alike she is to him. They’re both leaders of Torchwood, but they each have their own MO, so it was really fun to play with that.”

Paul Clayton (Mr Colchester), Alexandria Riley (Ng) and Jonny Green (Tyler Steel)star in Torchwood: Aliens Among Us 3.

“It was Russell’s idea to introduce Yvonne”, says producer James Goss. “She’s come back to take over Torchwood and show them what proper leadership is like. She’s very much got her own agenda and she’s ruthless, but she’s also so much fun. It’s hard to imagine Torchwood without her.”
