Time Lord Collar

Ever wanted to cosplay your favourite Doctor Who characters? Here’s our guide to making your own Time Lord collar…
Christel Dee is an imposing figure in her home-made Time Lord costume.

These ceremonial robes and headdresses come in a variety of different colours depending on which Gallifreyan Chapter the Time Lord wearing them belongs to.

Gallifreyan couture is possibly my favourite over-the-top attire in Doctor Who. Time Lords are known for their pomposity and grandeur – and they don’t shy away from displaying this in their fashion choices.

The Time Lords of the High Council of Gallifrey cover themselves from head to toe in heavy, luscious robes and oversized, decorated headdresses. Their headgear – particularly the dainty headpiece worn by the Inquisitor (Lynda Bellingham) in The Trial of a Time Lord (1986) – makes me think of the exquisitely embroidered jewelled headdresses of the Tudor and Elizabethan times. I like anything that’s ornate and flamboyant, so couldn’t resist having a go at making a Time Lord collar of my own.

The robe and collar combo was first introduced in The Deadly Assassin (1976), the last story to feature the work of renowned costume designer James Acheson, who also came up with the iconic look for Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor.
