Bernice Summerfield:The Story So Far Volumes One and Two

It’s 20 years this September since Big Finish Productions released its first audio plays. Today, the company is best known for itsDoctor Whoranges (1999-present), but it all began in the summer of 1998, when the company cast Lisa Bowerman in the title role ofProfessor Bernice Summerfield.

Bernice, or Benny to her friends, had been created by Paul Cornell for his 1992 novel Love and War . The book was an early instalment of Virgin’s The New Adventures , which continued the Seventh Doctor’s story beyond the television series’ 1989 cancellation and gave him new companions. Benny, an archaeologist from the 26th century, was the first of these, and became so popular that when Virgin’s Doctor Who lines ended, Benny kept going in books of her own.

Big Finish initially adapted six existing Benny novels for audio, before moving into original stories which continue to this day. (Lately, she’s been travelling with the ‘Unbound Doctor’ – a paralleluniverse Doctor described by James Goss, the series’ current producer, as “basically a walking Tangfastic”.) But to mark the 20th anniversary of Lisa’s debut, the saga is on hold in favour of The Story So Far , a celebratory anthology in two volumes.

“Paul wanted key players from Benny’s various Big Finish eras to be involved, and Lisa adored the idea of spending time with some of the guest stars she’s worked with over the years,” explains James. “From those conversations we came up with the idea of six stories, each from a different era of Benny’s life – so we see her having adventures as a teenager, as an archaeologist, and as a companion to the Doctor.

“If you’ve never heard a Benny audio before, you’ll get to realise she’s shared her life with some stunning people. There’s rogue Time Lord Braxiatel, haphazard husband Jason Kane, best friend Ruth, and David Warner’s sourly twinkling Unbound Doctor. If you’re a devoted fan of Benny, you get six stories that should hopefully bring back a rush of fond memories, silently nail down the odd loose end, and remind you of how mad and fun and innovative the range has been.”
