Meet the Team

In the first part of a new series, some of Doctor Who‘s key players explain what goes into making the show…

Showrunner Chris Chibnall and executive producer Matt Strevens lead the Series 11 team at Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff.

Andy Pryor

“I never quite know what’s coming next,” says casting director Andy Pryor.

“Once we knew that Peter Capaldi wanted to leave, it was very clear that Chris [Chibnall] wanted us to cast a female Doctor,” says casting director Andy Pryor, reflecting on the process that led to Jodie Whittaker being chosen to play the Thirteenth Doctor. “That was the idea from the start, and it was music to my ears. Chris and I met up in characteristically secret fashion and he talked me though his plans for the show.”

Andy has been Doctor Who‘s casting director since the show resumed production in 2004. Chris Chibnall is the third showrunner he’s worked with in that time, following Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat. “Chris’ approach to casting is very liberating,” says Andy. “He likes meaty guest roles, which is great for me, so the thought process about the cast for any given episode starts fairly early on in the script process. This is when we start to discuss the possibilities.

“With some roles, Chris has a very clear idea of what sort of performance or actor he’d like to see. With others, he has an open mind and is very happy to be a lateral thinker. This is a great approach for a casting director, as we all like to think outside the box where possible. Chris and [executive producer] Matt Strevens both encourage that and are very enthusiastic about discussing what may seem crazy but which can sometimes end up being the best idea. Like Russell and Steven, Chris is great at being ambitious about our aim for some roles but is also very open to me bringing in completely new people. I always say that a Doctor Who set is one of the best places for a young or new actor to learn because they’re working with the best, in terms of our regular cast, lead guest cast, directors, heads of department and crew.”
