BBC BOOKS

RRP £16.99 PUBLISHED 27 September

WRITTEN BY Christel Dee and Simon Guerrier

The Women Who Lived is the first official book published in celebration of Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the Thirteenth Doctor. Written by Christel Dee and Simon Guerrier, the book celebrates the women who have played a significant role in the Doctor’s life in the show’s 55-year history.

With children’s books sorely lacking in stories about empowered women, The Women Who Lived is another stab at adding balance to the genre. And given the new female Doctor, what better place to start than with a book about the extraordinary women from the Whoniverse? As the authors state, Doctor Who has always featured women who have “tackled feminist issues directly” and demonstrated “their independence”.

Dee and Guerrier have borrowed heavily from the celebrated book series Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls and Stories for Boys Who Dare to be Different, echoing both the writing and presentation style. Each page contains an inspirational bedtime tale about a strong and independent woman from both old and new Who episodes. Alongside the text on each character is a colourful and somewhat playful portrait; illustrated by several talented female artists, these are sure to raise a smile.
