Amazing Grace

Sharon D Clarke’s time on Doctor Who may have been short-lived but her character, Grace O’Brien, casts a long shadow over the series…
Grace O’Brien (Sharon D Clarke) in her final moments in The Woman Who Fell to Earth (2018); and Graham (Bradley Walsh) recalls his much-missed wife in Arachnids in the UK (2018).
Grace and Graham appear to be reunited in It Takes You Away (2018).

In Doctor Who’s 2018 series opener we loved and lost Grace O’Brien – the Woman Who Fell to Earth in her quest to save others. “It’s very emotional,” says Sharon D Clarke, who plays Grace. “At the end of that first episode it looks quite final, like it’s the last we’ve seen of my character. But of course, this is Doctor Who we’re dealing with…” Grace doesn’t cheat death but she does reappear – as a memory of Graham’s. Her spirit inhabits their house, a sensitive realisation of the grieving process in Arachnids in the UK. In It Takes You Away the Solitract (a conscious other universe) takes her form, to entice Graham to stay in its mirror world.

Sharon is with the Doctor Who team today, on location to record her final scenes of the series for It Takes You Away. Make-up designer Claire Pritchard has kindly allowed us into her hair and make-up trailer. According to Claire, “It’s the warmest place on set.” “We have been cold out there,” Sharon agrees as we pull up a couple of heavy make-up chairs. “It’s not glamorous.
