Doctor Who has often plundered the classics for inspiration. What would Robert Holmes and Philip Hinchcliffe have done, for example, if they hadn’t had such well-stocked libraries?

Rarely, though, has Doctor Who attempted a straight, albeit sci-fi-tinged, adaptation of a canon classic. Co-writer James Goss was, we’re told here in a behind-the-scenes natter, sitting by a pool in Spain with his head in Joseph Conrad’s 1904 novel Nostromo when he hit on the idea to remake it as a Doctor Who (well, sort of Doctor Who) story. So, for the South American colony town of Costaguana read the colony planet of Callous, for the silver they’re mining read swenyo, and for Nostromo himself read the War Master, or rather the kindly, twinkly, suspiciously genial Mr Orman he’s currently incognito as.
