How did Resolution fare in the ratings, and how does that compare to previous Christmas Specials?
The newly armoured Dalek tests its weaponry on the British army in Resolution (2019).

Broadcast on New Year’s Day 2019, the latest Doctor Who Special attracted a consolidated audience of 7.13 million viewers, including those who watched within one week of its broadcast. To break that down further, 3.42m watched live on transmission, with 1.74m watching later that evening. 6.96m watched on televisions, while 0.17m watched on other devices, such as computers, laptops and phones.

Sadly, that means that Resolution has become the lowest-rated of Doctor Who’s 21st-century Specials to date. It was down almost a million on 2017’s Twice Upon a Time (7.92m, which was a TV-only figure, as other devices weren’t included then) and also a fair bit short of the previous low for any Special, The Husbands of River Song at Christmas 2015, which was seen by 7.69m (also a TV-only seven-day figure). Resolution also became the first of those 18 Specials to miss the Top 10 of the week’s highest-rated programmes, although it took a creditable 14th place behind such shows as Manhunt, Luther, Coronation Street and Dancing on Ice.
