THE TIME WARRIOR

Director: Alan Bromly Producer: Barry Letts Broadcast: 15 December 1973 – 5 January 1974

The medieval setting of The Time Warrior demanded an authentic-looking location. Filming took place within the courtyard, buildings and surrounding woods of Peckforton Castle, near Tarporley, between 7 and 10 May 1973.

The budget for the serial precluded the use of an actual castle for the location, given the potential expenditure involved in closing a public building to tourists for the duration of the shoot, so production assistant Marcia Wheeler identified this Victorian Gothic folly as a viable alternative. The building was designed by architect Anthony Salvin for John Tollemache (1805-90) and constructed on his substantial Cheshire estate between 1842 and 1851. The edifice had recently been used as a location for the Arthurian feature film Gawain and the Green Knight, which was released in June 1973 – one month after The Time Warrior completed its location shoot.

About Doctor Who Magazine

In its early days, Doctor Who was recorded on cumbersome cameras tethered to claustrophobic and often inadequate studios. The show rarely escaped these confines in the 1960s, but as technology improved, producers and directors became more adventurous. Location shooting has helped to create some of the most memorable episodes in the series’ long history. In this unique publication, new features, exclusive interviews and rare images tell the story of those episodes and the people who made them happen.
