UNIT IS PROVIDING SECURITY FOR A PROJECT aimed at drilling through the Earth’s crust in search of a new form of gas. The Doctor is also present, taking advantage of the site’s nuclear reactor to power his experiments with the TARDIS console.

The pig-headed director of the project, Professor Stahlman, disregards warning signs and words of caution – some of the latter coming from the Doctor – and presses on with the drilling. Several workers become ill after encountering a green slime oozing from the drill-head, regressing to an animalistic state and turning murderous. Stahlman himself becomes infected but hides the early symptoms.
