THE GIRL WHO DIED

THE TARDIS LANDS ON EARTH IN THE NINTH century, where the Doctor and Clara Oswald are promptly captured by Vikings. After a two-day journey by longship, they arrive at a coastal village settlement. The surrounding mountains suggest they have been brought to the Vikings’ native Scandinavia.

The Doctor attempts to escape by telling the villagers that he is the god Odin having taken human form, but he is trumped by a giant, ghostly vision of Odin that appears in the sky. Odin is in fact the leader of a deadly warrior race called the Mire, and he is on a mission to seize the village’s finest fighting men. Aboard the Mire spaceship the Viking warriors are absorbed, their testosterone and adrenalin extracted for the Mire to consume in liquid form.

Also taken aboard the ship, Clara tries to bluff Odin into avoiding a conflict he cannot win, while teenage tomboy Ashildr declares war on the aliens. The Mire General decides to return the following day to meet the challenge.

About Doctor Who Magazine

“History sometimes gives us a terrible shock, and that is because we don’t quite fully understand... We’re all too small to realise its final pattern.” Doctor Who’s first journey in 1963 took viewers back to the Stone Age. Since then the TARDIS has visited many other landmarks in a unique chronicle of the Doctor’s favourite planet. Purely historical stories were once a mainstay of the series, but for more than 50 years significant periods in Earth’s past have provided evocative settings for more fantastical adventures. This unprecedented guide takes a trip back in time with the people, places and classic episodes that are essential parts of Doctor Who history.
