The late David Fisher wrote a number of outstanding scripts for Doctor Who, culminating in the 1980 story The Leisure Hive. Nine years later he shared his memories of the series with Doctor Who Magazine. These are highlights and previously unpublished extracts from that conversation.

David Fisher was 60 years old when Doctor Who Magazine interviewed him in 1989. It had been six years since his last script was produced (for the series Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense) and he was now referring to his career as a television writer in the past tense. Which was not to say he’d retired – when we met he was midway through a series of meticulously researched books with his former Doctor Who script editor Anthony Read.
