ICE SCULPTING

In the 1960s Jack Lovell made the costumes for some of Doctor Who’s greatest invading aliens. In this previously unpublished interview, conducted in 1995, he remembers the creation of the Ice Warriors.

Jack Lovell was the unsung monster-maker of 1960s Doctor Who. He never received an on-screen credit – much to his annoyance – and was only rarely invited to the studio to see his work in front of the cameras. He did, however, make a significant contribution to the series in the second half of the decade.

“One of the first things we made for Doctor Who were the Fungoids – giant mushrooms that could destroy a Dalek,” said Jack, recalling the 1965 story The Chase. “We also made the Mire Beasts for that story, which were based on an octopus. We never really got detailed design drawings – it was mainly a matter of ‘Jack, we need a monster – what can you do?’ It was all very last minute.”
