THE SPARE-PART SPARE-PART PEOPLE

In 1970 a story submitted to the Doctor Who production office began with a bizarre invasion led by unstoppable mummies. The Spare-Part People is made all the more intriguing by the fact it was co-written by the actor currently playing the Doctor...

Jon Pertwee loved adventures – real or imaginary. On Friday 5 June 1970, this personal advertisement appeared in The Times, offering the excitement of exotic adventures with the new Doctor.

For Pertwee, this Moroccan jaunt fell neatly into the break between recording the final session of Inferno on Friday 29 May and filming his segment of the Amicus portmanteau film The House that Dripped Blood at Shepperton Studios from mid-July. A few weeks before placing the ad, however, Pertwee had crafted a different kind of exotic escapade – this one intended for his television alter ego – and passed it to the BBC production office as a candidate for his second series, due to start shooting in September.

Jon Pertwee in 1970, the year he co-wrote Dr Who and the Spare-Part People.

“I knew a very well-known writer named Reed de Rouen – half-Cherokee Red Indian, actually – and he and I wrote a complete Doctor Who, which we submitted, with great joy, because we knew it was extremely good,” Pertwee told Nick Setchfield in January 1986 for an interview printed posthumously in SFX magazine in 2008. In fact, US-born de Rouen was just as well-known as an actor as he was as a writer, and had appeared as Pa Clanton in two 1966 episodes of Doctor Who: Johnny Ringo and The OK Corral.
