More worktop space and lots of storage are always top of most wishlists when it comes to the design of a new kitchen. But since when did we start relying on the humble kitchen island to deliver these important functions, as well as so much more? From incorporating sinks, hot water taps, dishwashers, induction hobs, wine storage, integrated seating and even charging surfaces for work zones, it is dizzying how much the design of islands has evolved, and how much they can offer now. That’s not even including all of the exciting new materials that you can use to make yours look as stylish as it is functional. Read all about just what this seemingly unassuming piece of kitchen furniture can offer your scheme in Emily Peck’s article, Fantasy Islands, on page 66. Meanwhile one kitchen island that has serious appeal to me is the powder-coated steel modular unit by Vipp, which is featured in Into the Woods on page 24. This family built their kitchen extension in a glass box-like formation out into their garden and transformed the open-plan ground floor into a contemporary cooking, dining and entertaining area at the same time (see left). Full length glass windows mean they can now enjoy views across their land all year round, which is just bliss. Completely different, but equally impressive is the smart London terrace kitchen which is covered in Sunshine on a Rainy Day on page 34. Re-modelling their downstairs living area to step on to their lush garden terrace, this couple incorporated a mix of veneer wood and grey laminate and an ultra thin island that looks both contemporary and classic at the same time. It’s inspiring to see the level of efficiency and luxury you can achieve in such a small yet perfectly formed space. For more inspiring spaces simply read on... Have a great month!

Best value interiors mag!

I have been planning my new kitchen and home renovation for quite some time, it seemed to be taking ages to find quality inspiration and I bought so many different magazine trying to get ideas, until I downloaded an issue of EKBB. It was brilliant, there is so much inside and now I've got plans to renovate the whole house! It's real value for money and now I've got a subscription too! Reviewed 19 July 2013
