From the moment I saw the images come in for the industrial-style kitchen on the cover of this issue, I was excited. Dark and handsome in powder-coated stainless steel, its sleek freestanding look feels so fresh right now. Add to that, the fact that the kitchen is on a houseboat in Copenhagen and features an aquatic Labrador, and I was completely awestruck. This couple managed to downsize their lives by half in order to create their vision, and in doing so they went for an adaptable kitchen which could be moved anywhere, as well as assembled how they wanted it. So clever! See A Life on Water (page 28). This sort of portability and flexibility is becoming increasingly popular and is featured again in our Architect Designed Kitchen (page 74). Designer Rory Harmer worked within a timber-framed extension to create a statement kitchen which centres around a modular island. The result is a perfect blend of old and new, and heralds a freestanding style that’s a refreshing new direction in kitchen design. We explore this look further in Modular Thinking (page 82), and in the same trends-led vein look at how contrasting materials in kitchen design has become more and more the look of the moment – see Mix & Match (page 104). With the first of the spring bank holidays on the horizon, we are all getting ourselves into organisational mode, with many of you (including myself ) moving into a new home which requires major bathroom and bedrooms planning. We’ve got three bathrooms to fit out in our new house – one en suite, one family and one guest – so, after I’ve pored over ideas for our kitchen, I’ll be turning directly to our bathrooms section and the Plan of Action feature on page 142. Also, if space
allows, my dream has always been for a walk-in wardrobe, so for
sleek dressing room solutions and streamlined systems, I’ll be taking notes from Step Inside on p.168, and urge you to take a look too.

Best value interiors mag!

I have been planning my new kitchen and home renovation for quite some time, it seemed to be taking ages to find quality inspiration and I bought so many different magazine trying to get ideas, until I downloaded an issue of EKBB. It was brilliant, there is so much inside and now I've got plans to renovate the whole house! It's real value for money and now I've got a subscription too! Reviewed 19 July 2013
