1 December Guided tour Hampshire. Explore some of the gems of Hampshire Record Office’s historic collections in Capturing Christmas, an evening of festive-themed fun. The record office is home to some eight miles of shelving, housing thousands of items, from ancient pipe rolls to 1970s 8mm cinefilm. Visitors will be given the opportunity to explore some of the Winchester archive’s seasonally themed treasures, including a film show and fascinating documents, and enjoy a festive tipple of mulled wine with a mince pie on a cold winter’s evening.

1-3 December Weekend course Kent. The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies (IGHS) in Canterbury is running a weekend course entitled Taking Your Family History Research Further. The course covers oft-neglected records and sources, with topics including census substitutes, heraldry, advanced paleography, manorial and military records. The course also provides the chance to meet fellow family historians and tutors on the correspondence course (£235, excluding accommodation). The IGHS is also launching an advanced family history course in December, Completing Your Ancestral Journey, as part of its three-level series of distance learning courses (£450).
