Without realising it you very likely already have the tools you need at home to make a start on your family history today. Don’t forget not only are there desktop PCs but of course there are laptops, notebooks, netbooks, tablets and iPads.

Keep your tree organised
As you begin researching your family history you’ll realise that you’ll gather all sorts of information about your ancestors’ lives and times past. Using a computer will help you keep your findings organised and, combined with the records on the internet, enable you to track down clues and find those family members.
Store your discoveries safely
I have got quite a powerful laptop which is lightweight and has good memory to help run everything well. I have organising programs for writing up stories or writing articles, plus a good genealogy program to store my family tree in (there are quite a few about now and they are great as you can store all your genealogy discoveries in them. See ‘Family tree software’ – above – for links).
