A mini history of the 1939 Register
The online release of the 1939 National Register revolutionised the way that we’re able to search for our 20th-century ancestors.
With the 1921 Census not due to be released until January 2022, the complete loss of the 1931 Census (the returns for England and Wales were destroyed by fire – the returns for Scotland have survived) and the fact that no census was taken in 1941, the 1939 Register represents a godsend to us as we seek out our more recent relatives.
