Perhaps visiting an archive will be the day that you finally crack the mystery of great-great Aunt Annie! Archives have unique sources of information that aren’t available online. However, the difference between an enjoyable day and a disappointing one often lies in your preparation.
It is so important to have a research plan for your visit. This does not necessarily mean a regimented formal strategy, but you should ask yourself two questions:
1. What am I hoping to find out?
2. Which documents at the archive could help me?
Archives can range from modern, purpose-built centres, like Birmingham Library, through to well-loved historic buildings such as General Register House in Edinburgh
If you don’t do this, then you may waste your journey because either the archive does not have what you want, or because there is insufficient time at the archive to get yourself organised. Many archives have genealogists or archivists available to assist you, but it’s essential to have your own basic plan of investigation.
